Celebration 80

To perform for us, Nana sometimes had to brave Quebec winter. That is the case, in particular, when she participates in a benefit concert for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra on January 8, 1980. This one, set in Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier at Place des Arts, marks the 50th birthday of her impresario, Samuel Gesser, who contributes to the cultural life of Canadians for almost thirty years. This prestigious gala is given in the presence of several political leaders: the Premier of Quebec, Mr. René Lévesque, the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Joe Clark and the Mayor of Montreal, Mr. Jean Drapeau.

The event is very successful and generates $225,000. For Montrealers, it's a rare opportunity to see many of the biggest names of music performing on the same stage: Pete Seeger, Monique Leyrac, Nana Mouskouri, Maureen Forrester and Harry Belafonte. Throughout the evening, instrumental and popular songs as well as classical ones follow each another. For the occasion, Nana is accompanied by her conductor Alain Goraguer. She sings three titles: "Pardonne-moi", "Autumn leaves" and "Casta diva". Also two duets: "Plaisir d'amour" with Maureen Forrester and "Try to remember" with Harry Belafonte. And "Passing through" with all the artists.

In the back stage, there is a festive atmosphere. After the gala, Nana, Monique, Maureen, Harry and Pete gather with Mr. Gesser’s wife and mother. On a picture, we see them singing as he cuts his cake.

Nana's stay in Montreal only lasts 48 hours because the next day, she must leave for a long tour in Germany and Austria. However, her tour manager will be grateful to her for traveling for the occasion.
