Barcelona - Palau de la Música

Friday, February 21, 2014 - 21h00

This show was set at the Palau de la Música. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage, the theater is known for its unique architecture. Despite its one hundred and six years of existence, it preserved its original cachet with its mosaics, its stained glass, its sculptures and its chandeliers. For the 2,000 spectators who come to each performance, it's a delight for the eyes!

After taking my seat, I cannot help observing the hall during several minutes. It's composed of two balconies and an organ. The setting is sumptuous. I'm fascinated by the stained glass ceiling in the shape of an inverted bell and by the superb mosaic with the bust of the seven muses of art on the back of the stage. The instruments are in place and a white rose is hung to Nana's microphone.

When the musicians arrive on stage, all eyes turn to them. They wear black pants and a jacket with a white shirt and a bow. Luciano is at the keyboard, Philippe behind his cymbals, his congas, his bongos and his clarinet. Pili with his bass guitar and Yannick with his classical or electric guitar. After the musical introduction, Nana appears dressed with a beautiful red blouse with sequins and a skirt.

Nana begins her presentation in Spanish. Then she mostly uses English. The evening progresses like a crescendo with an international program. Through the songs, the atmosphere warms up. Her stage fright gradually fades and she lets herself carry by the music. Her face lights up and she becomes more expressive in her gestures. Her transitions from one octave to another raises the public’s enthusiasm. Whether she sings behind or with the microphone in her hands, Nana moves little. She concentrates and takes the time to look at the spectators. For her jazz medley, she sits on a stool near the piano.

The most awaited song of the evening is undoubtedly "Libertad". This classical of Verdi evokes certain periods of history and has a particular meaning in each country. From the first words, many express their satisfaction and begin to hum. With "Siboney" as the last encore, the public is fulfilled and cannot help applauding her musical flight.

During the evening, Nana presents her daughter Lénou. Dressed with a bright red blouse and black pants, she performs three songs. Her moving rendition of "Alfonsina y el mar" in tribute to Mercedes Sosa earns her a standing ovation. Moved, Lénou has tears in her eyes. At the end of the evening, with her mother, she sing a Catalan folklore which is then repeated by the audience. The two singers did the same in Turkish, in Hebrew and in Dutch in other countries.

During almost two hours, we got a generous and an uninterrupted program. At almost 80 years of age, Nana’s energy and memory are outstanding. She loves being on stage and she sets herself challenges while taking away her microphone to sing A Capella and exploiting different octaves. The public came to see Nana, which is impossible to do while listening to her records. So, what a privilege to be before her in a so beautiful theater!
