Montreal, QC - Place des Arts - Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier
Saturday, April 5, 2014 - 20h00
On April 5, 2014, the Montreal public found Nana after eight years of absence. During two hours, 3,000 spectators gathered at Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier and let themselves enchanted by her voice, her presence and her generosity. What a joy to be there and then to write about it! |
An evening filled with anecdotes and songs begins. Nana emphasizes among other the 50 years of Place des Arts. In 1965, she performed with Harry Belafonte. She pays tribute to him by singing "Try to remember" and does the same for the late Amy Winehouse with "Love is a losing game", an unreleased song. As in each city, her international repertoire represents an important part of the program. In Quebec, she performs some of her big French hits like "Le temps qu'il nous reste" and "Je chante avec toi liberté" and two of our songs, "Je reviens chez nous" and "Un Canadien errant". Some new arrangements surprise us and her daughter Lénou sings several duets with her. |
Radiant in her scarlet stage dress, Nana gladly jokes and interacts with the audience. Accompanied by four talented musicians, she enjoys sharing the stage with them. Each one showcases at particular times: Philippe gets closer with his saxophone, Luciano plays the piano with more intensity, Pili stirs the strings of his bass and the guitarist Yannick sings a duet with her. Lénou, dressed in white, returns after 15 years. Again tonight, I'm dazzled by her rendition of "Alfonsina y el mar". This time, knowing the story, I feel more the sadness in her voice and she gives me shivers; that Argentinian writer stricken by an incurable cancer who chose to die like in her poems by drowning in the sea. |
The harcore fans point out that Nana is more in voice than at the beginning of the tour. For having seen her live on February 21, I agree. The training and the audience response certainly contributed to it. It is especially noticeable in the second portion of the show as her voice is fully warmed up. She goes through the movie songs, a repertoire in which the interpretation prevails. With the complicity of her pianist, she has a great time. Also, the transition to the classical tone in "Plaisir d'amour" is quite exquisite. Her vocal control is undeniable. The spectators, pleasantly surprised by such a performance, left delighted. |
