Among the Quebecers - 11

If the younger generation identifies her for her roles in television and in movies, it should be recalled that DOMINIQUE MICHEL (1932- ) began as a singer in 1954 and that she has eight albums to her credit. She then turned to television while becoming co-host, then actress in the series "Moi et l’autre", with the complicity of Denise Filiatrault. She participated frequently in the televised New Year's Eve revue "Bye Bye" where we discovered her talents as imitator. During her long career, the artist moved us, made us laugh and surprised us, especially with her performance in "The Barbarian Invasions". Nana knows her, because Dodo interviewed her at the time of her two first tours in Quebec.

MONIQUE MILLER (1933- ) is a known actress since 1952, the year of the opening of CBC. She has played more than 150 roles in radio dramas, television series, movies and in theatre. Like Nana, she’s a stage performer and a regular performer at Place of Arts. In her opinion, work keeps alive and age doesn’t matter. That's why she understands very well Nana who decides to do another big tour at 83 years old. Monique has been married to the chansonnier Claude Léveillée.

Born in Montreal and raised in Ontario, HEATHER MONROE-BLUM (1950- ) studied and taught in many universities in North America. In 1994, she returned to live in the metropolis and entered at McGill University to fill various positions. Nine years later, she became the first woman Principal and Vice-Chancellor. At the end of her term in 2013, the rector introduced Nana at the Convention of graduates. She praised her brilliant singing career and her social and humanitarian commitment. She also highlighted her friendship with Quebec and Canada.

PAOLO NOËL (1929-2022) made his beginnings in 1949 in Montreal cabarets. He became one of the first popular singers who accompanied himself on the guitar. With his voice and his repertoire, he was considered as the equal of Tino Rossi. The 1960’s represent his most prolific artistic period as much on disc as in television. He interviewed Nana in 1967 and 1969, on the program "Toast et café".

The one that we described as host entertainer began his career at the beginning of the forties in radio. With his natural ease, JACQUES NORMAND (1922-1998) improvised monologues and quickly distinguished himself as host-singer. This also led him to perform on stage and to record his first discs. In 1952, he made the leap to TV by successively animating variety programs, all while continuing a well established sideline as presenter in the night clubs of Montreal. He made a gradual return to Radio hosting in the sixties and seventies. During this period he met Nana. Jacques Normand, one of the pioneers of Quebec’s artistic life, showed the way for the future generations by inaugurating the first summer theatre, the first cabaret.

Priest, historian and teacher, MAURICE O'BREADY (1901-1970) contributed greatly to the creation of the Université de Sherbrooke. Three years after his death, the performance hall of this university campus was named in his honour. On its 50th anniversary, Nana had good words for this hall where she has performed nine times.

DANIELLE OUIMET (1947- ) worked in every artistic field, but she especially made her known as actress and hostess. Québec Cinema owes her of having made it evolve at a time when there were still many prejudices. She is also the first female voice, news reader on FM Band. There she met Nana by interviewing her. Danielle will have made as much in television with all her participations and the interviews she realized.

Actor and radio and TV host, ANDRÉ PAILLÉ (1942- ) lived the biggest part of his career in Quebec City. As a Nana fan, he got some of her imported albums. During his 33 years on the air of CHRC, he often programmed her songs and a few times, he interviewed her. In 1990, he gave her an honorary disk including her most popular songs.
